What is an AC Induction Motor (ACIM)?

Definition:
An alternating - current induction motor is a kind of electric motor that generates torque through the interaction between the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator windings and the induced current in the rotor. It is characterized by the fact that there is a slip between the rotor and the stator magnetic field, that is, the speed of the rotor is always lower than the speed of the stator magnetic field.

Working Principle:

  • Stator Windings: The stator windings are usually three - phase windings and generate a rotating magnetic field through three - phase alternating current.

  • Rotating Magnetic Field: When three - phase alternating current passes through the stator windings, a rotating magnetic field will be generated inside the motor.

  • Rotor Induction: The rotor usually has a squirrel - cage or wound - type structure inside. When the rotating magnetic field cuts through the rotor conductors, a current will be induced in the rotor conductors.

  • Electromagnetic Torque: The induced current and the rotating magnetic field interact to generate electromagnetic torque, which drives the rotor of the motor to rotate.

  • Slip: Since the speed of the rotor is always lower than the speed of the rotating magnetic field, there is a certain amount of slip. This is an important characteristic of an alternating - current induction motor.

Structural Characteristics:

  • Stator: The stator is the stationary part with three - phase windings inside. It usually adopts a laminated structure to reduce eddy - current losses.

  • Rotor:Squirrel - Cage Rotor: The inside of the rotor is made of cast - aluminum or copper bars, and the two ends are connected through a ring - shaped conductor to form a closed - loop circuit.

  • Wound Rotor: The inside of the rotor is a winding, and the rotor current can be adjusted through an external resistor, thus changing the performance of the motor.

  • Housing: The housing of the motor is used to fix the stator and rotor and provides necessary support and protection.
