How does an AC voltage detector pen tester work?

The primary function of these detectors is to detect the presence of alternating current (AC) voltage and alert the user through visual and auditory signals. Detectors with the HLX vibration mode also feature haptic feedback, allowing for clear perception of voltage presence even in noisy environments.

  • Probe Contact: When the detector's probe comes into contact with electrical wires or equipment, the internal sensing elements (such as a sensing coil) detect changes in the AC electric field.

  • Signal Amplification: The detected weak electrical signal is amplified by the internal amplification circuit.

  • Threshold Detection: The amplified signal is compared with a preset threshold, and an alarm is triggered only if the signal strength exceeds the threshold.

  • Alarm Output: Once voltage exceeding the threshold is detected, the detector alerts the user through LED lights, beeping sounds, and vibration feedback.

Analysis and Handling of Metering Abnormality of 35 kV Outdoor Combined Transformer
Analysis and Handling of Metering Abnormality of 35 kV Outdoor Combined Transformer
1. IntroductionFrequent occurrences of PT burnout and primary - side fuse melting in combined transformers lead to inaccurate energy meter measurement and seriously threaten the safe operation of the power grid. This paper focuses on the repeated PT damage and fuse melting issues of a 35 kV combined transformer, investigates the fault causes, proposes solutions, and recovers the incorrect electricity quantity through correction coefficients. This effectively reduces grid losses and mitigates ser

Analysis of an Explosion Accident of a 35 kV Voltage Transformer
Voltage transformers (PTs) consist of iron cores and winding coils, working similarly to transformers but with small capacity. They convert high voltage to low voltage for protection, measurement and metering devices, widely used in plants/stations. Classified by insulation: dry - type (≤6 kV), cast - type (indoor 3 - 35 kV), oil - immersed (outdoor ≥35 kV), and SF₆ gas - filled (for combined appliances).During substation operation, accidents from PT electromagnetic resonance or insulation

What Tests Does a Qualified Outdoor Current Transformer Need to Pass?
Hey everyone, I’m Oliver, and I’ve been working in current transformer (CT) testing for 8 years. From running around with test equipment on site to now leading full inspection teams, I’ve seen how thousands of outdoor CTs go through a whole series of tests — like going through a military training camp — before they can finally be put into service.A few days ago, a friend asked me:“Oliver, our factory just produced a new batch of outdoor CTs. We’re getting

What should be noted when selecting and installing outdoor current transformers?
Hey everyone, I'm James, and I've been working with current transformers (CTs) for 10 years. From running around job sites with my mentor, wiring and debugging equipment, to now leading substation projects and handling all kinds of complex CT issues — I’ve worked with a lot of outdoor current transformers over the years. And trust me, I’ve made mistakes, learned from them, and picked up some real-world experience along the way.A few days ago, a fellow engineer asked me:“Ja

What are the methods to reduce the failure rate of outdoor current transformers?
What are the methods to reduce the failure rate of outdoor current transformers?
I. Research Reasons and Background1. Importance of Current TransformersCurrent transformers play the role of current transformation and electrical isolation. They convert the large current of the primary system into a proportional small secondary current, which is supplied to measuring instruments, relay protection, and automatic devices. In the power system, the role of current transformers is irreplaceable and directly plays a key role in the safe and stable operation of the power grid.2. Hars

What are the applications of GIS voltage transformers in digital substations?
Hey everyone, I’m Echo, and I’ve been working with voltage transformers (VTs) for 12 years. From learning how to wire and do error tests under my mentor’s watchful eye, to now participating in all kinds of smart substation projects — I’ve seen the power industry evolve from traditional systems to fully digital ones. Especially in recent years, more and more 220 kV GIS systems are adopting electronic voltage transformers (EVTs), slowly replacing the old-school electro
