Diversity Factor

What Is Diversity Factor

We can not store electricity. Thus we have to generate electricity when it is required and as much it is required. The electrical source either it is generating station or substation or any other electric utility, has to fulfil the maximum demand of all connected loads to that source. But we are fortunate enough that the maximum demands of all the loads connected to a source usually do not happen simultaneously. Instead, maximum loading demands of various loads occur at different period of times in a day. Because of this typicality of electrical load, we can construct a comparatively smaller source of electricity to fulfil a significant number of consumers or loads. Here the term diversity factor comes into the picture. We define the diversity factor of an electrical system as the ratio of the sum of maximum demands of individual loads connected to the system to the simultaneous maximum demand of the system itself. We can understand better if we give a practical example of diversity factor. The maximum simultaneous load on the substation cannot be more or even equal to the sum of the maximum demand of individual loads as these maximum demands of individual load do not occur concurrently at the same time.

Let us consider an electrical substation. We can categorise the loads connected to that substation as domestic loads, commercial loads, industrial loads, municipal loads, irrigation loads and traction loads.

  • Domestic loads consist of light, fans, refrigerators, heaters, televisions, air conditioners water pumps etc. The maximum demand for residential loads or domestic loads occurs typically at evening.

  • Commercial loads consist of the lighting of shops and electrical appliances used in stores and restaurants. The consumption of load maximises during the evening as well as the daytime also.

  • Industrial loads consist of heavy industrial machinery.

  • Municipal loads consist of the street lighting system, water pumping system in water pumping stations. The consumption of these loads is not also consistent throughout 24 hours.

  • Irrigation consumes power during daytime only.

  • Traction loads become maximum during starting and ending of office hours just.

So we now understand that the maximum demands of all loads connected to a substation do not coincide. Instead, they occur in different periods during a 24-hour span. Because of this diversity of electrical loads, we can construct comparatively lower capacity substation or a similar utility for larger connected loads.

Let us name an electrical substation as X. A, B, C and E are downstream substations connected to the substation X. The maximum demand of these substations is A megawatts, B megawatts, C megawatts D megawatt, and E megawatt respectively. The simultaneous maximum demand of the X substation is X megawatt. The diversity factor substitution would be

It is needless to say that the value of diversity factor must be greater than unity. It is always desirable to have diversity factor as bigger as possible, to facilitate the commercial viability electricity utility business.

Now you are going to show you one practical example of diversity factor. A power transformer is connected to the following loads. The industrial load is 1500 kW, the domestic load is 100 kW and the municipal load is 50 kW. The maximum demand for the power transformer is 1000 kW. The diversity factor of the transformer would be

Classification of Electric Power Distribution Network Systems
Classification of Electric Power Distribution Network Systems
The typical electric power system network is categorized into three main components: generation, transmission, and distribution. Electric power is produced in power plants, which are often located far from load centers. As a result, transmission lines are employed to deliver power over long distances. To minimize transmission losses, high-voltage power is used in transmission lines, and the voltage is reduced at the load center. The distribution system then delivers this power to end-users.Types

Why is the Ground Wire Always Positioned Above the Overhead Power Lines?
Ground Wire in Overhead Transmission LinesThe ground wire (also called earth wire or OPGW) installed above phase lines in overhead transmission lines acts as a key protective and safety component. It provides lightning protection, ground fault defense, and helps prevent electrical system disruptions. In overhead transmission lines, positioning the ground wire above phase lines serves specific safety and performance purposes. Referred to as a "shield wire" or "static wire," this configuration has

What is the Power Angle in a Power Transmission Line?
What is the Power Angle in a Power Transmission Line?
The power angle, denoted by δ, is the phase angle difference between two voltage levels in a power transmission line. Specifically, it represents the angular discrepancy between the sending-end voltage phasor and the receiving-end voltage (or between voltages at two bus points). In simpler terms, it quantifies the phase shift between voltage and current waveforms in the transmission line. Also referred to as the torque angle or load angle, this parameter is critical for two key reasons: it

Permanent Magnet Moving Coil or PMMC Instrument
DefinitionInstruments that utilize a permanent magnet to generate a stationary magnetic field within which a coil moves are known as Permanent Magnet Moving Coil (PMMC) instruments. They operate on the principle that torque is exerted on a moving coil situated in the magnetic field of a permanent magnet. PMMC instruments provide accurate results for direct current (DC) measurements.Construction of PMMC InstrumentThe moving coil and the permanent magnet are the key components of a PMMC instrument
